Blackburn Rovers are threatening to scupper Leicester City’s hopes of bringing home prodigal son Emile Heskey by snapping up the former England striker.
Heskey is on the lookout for a new club after being released by Aston Villa this summer and had been strongly linked with Hull City and Ipswich Town.
This week, Leicester City, with whom the 34-year-old started his career, became favourites for his signature after a flood of bets with the bookmakers.
But now Blackburn are targeting Heskey as one of two striker signings they want to make following a serious knee injury to Leon Best, their recent arrival from Newcastle United.
“What we must do is find a good replacement and also supplement that,” said Blackburn's global advisor Shebby Singh.
“When I heard the news, it was difficult for me not to cry. Life must go on but right now it hurts very deeply.
“There is still time for us to do that (strengthen the squad). Three weeks will be enough for us to make sure we start the season with a very competitive strike force.
“We were always going to look for someone to deputise for Leon. Now we must look for someone to play and another player to deputise.”
Blackburn have made a tentative inquiry for Huddersfield striker Jordan Rhodes but were told the player is not for sale.
Apart from Best, the strikers on Rovers’ books are recent Portuguese recruit Nuno Gomes, David Goodwillie, Jordan Slew and Nick Blackman.
But Heskey is being well backed to fill the void left by Best’s injury and is in to 5/1 with BetVictor
to have signed for Blackburn by the end of the current transfer window, with Leicester having been eased from 4/6 to 11/8.
