West Ham v Millwall tips - Lions could hold Hammers at Upton Park

Neil Roarty - 3 Feb 2012
West Ham host Millwall in what promises to be an electric East London derby on Saturday afternoon.

West Ham and Millwall are bitter rivals but they don't often get the chance to face each other as they are usually at least one division apart. They played in the Championship at the New Den in September but that was the first time they played in the league since 2005.

The head-to-head record between the two teams puts West Ham narrowly ahead with seven wins to Millwall's five but with seven draws it is fair to say that they are, historically at least, evenly matched. The odds this weekend make the Hammers, who are top of the Championship, the strong favourites but it is a brave man that takes the 4/7 on offer from bet365 that they beat their local rivals.

West Ham do, however, have a very strong home record this season and have won eight of their 13 matches at Upton Park. They have the strongest squad in the Championship but they don't always play the expansive football that many expect from a team that contains the likes of Kevin Nolan, Mark Noble and Henri Lansbury. The addition of exciting former Manchester United player Ravel Morrison will possibly make them more entertaining but Sam Allardyce's presence in the dugout will probably negate that.

If West Ham do adopt a defensive approach on Saturday then it is well worth backing under 2.5 goals at 10/11 with Ladbrokes. Millwall, who are 6/1 at Bet Victor to win at Upton Park, don't possess enough attacking threat to score more than once and so won't win the match but they could manage a 1-1 draw (7/1, Bet Victor) that could derail the Hammers' promotion push.

Recommendation

Over/Under 2.5 Goals - Under (10/11, Ladbrokes)
