Southampton have gone five points clear at the summit after results went their way in midweek. Saints ran out 2-0 winners at Hull City and that allowed them to pull away from Reading and West Ham United, who both failed to win. The South Coast club now welcome struggling Doncaster Rovers to St Mary’s on Saturday and another three points is likely to come their way.
Second-placed Reading’s recent red-hot form was brought to a shuddering halt by a 3-1 defeat to Peterborough and they will be looking to bounce back against fellow promotion hopefuls Blackpool, who currently occupy one of the play-off spots.
West Ham United were held by Middlesbrough in midweek and they must now visit Burnley, while Boro will look to boost their promotion bid further when they host Bristol City.
At the other end of the table there is a meeting of two teams currently in the relegation zone, Coventry City and Portsmouth. Both sides are desperately need of a win but this fixture could play into the hands of those teams above them, especially if it ends in a draw.
Nottingham Forest are one of those teams and they will be looking to build on their 7-3 rout of Leeds United when they host fourth-placed Brighton, while Leeds will be looking to bounce back against a Millwall side that will be brimming with confidence after their big win over fellow strugglers Doncaster Rovers.
