Peterborough United set for Championship relegation this season

Peterborough United are one of the more exciting Championship teams to watch, but their stay in tier two looks set to end in the 2012-13 campaign.

Darren Ferguson is sure to have tapped in to his father Sir Alex’s abundant football knowledge, yet even that is unlikely to be enough to spare the Posh from relegation.

After being promoted in 2010-11, life at the higher level started pretty well for Peterborough last term as they gave Ipswich a 7-1 thrashing in August and were safely in mid-table when the clocks went back.

But after Christmas the wheels came off fairly spectacularly and Ferguson’s side won only four more games, slipping to a final position of 18th in the table.

The problem is that the squad simply lacks quality. Yes, Peterborough have some promising young players and former Crawley striker Tyrone Barnett should score goals, but they do not possess the experience and class of most of their rivals.

Goalkeeper Joe Lewis will be a big miss having left on a free transfer for Cardiff and it remains to be seen how his replacement, Bobby Olejnik, will fare on his step up from League Two with Torquay.

An East Midlands derby against Leicester is the first game of the league season for Peterborough and that should tell us plenty about their prospects.

At 2/1 with Paddy Power they are the second favourites for the drop but if you fancy backing a team at a bigger price, newly-promoted Huddersfield Town could be worth a look at 5/1 with BetVictor.

The Terriers relied hugely on 40-goal Jordan Rhodes as they went up through the play-offs last term and if they have their arm twisted by a tempting offer of £3-4million for their star turn, they could find it tough going in the Championship.

Recommendation: Peterborough – 2/1 (Paddy Power)
