Southampton pair shortlisted for Championship Player of the Year

The Football League have announced the shortlists for the annual Football League Awards.

Three-man shortlists have been revealed for Championship Player of the Year, League One Player of the Year, League Two Player of the Year, Football League Young Player of the Year and Outstanding Manager Achievement.

High-flying Southampton dominate the Championship Player of the Year shortlist with both midfielder Adam Lallana and striker Rickie Lambert in the running for the award. Hoping to pip the Saints pair is Cardiff City midfielder Peter Whittingham.

The League One prize will be contested by Charlton Athletic’s Johnnie Jackson, Huddersfield Town’s Jordan Rhodes and Sheffield United’s Ched Evans, while the League Two winner will be either Marlon Pack of Cheltenham Town, Tyrone Barnett of Crawley Town or Matt Ritchie of Swindon Town.

The Football League Young Player of the Year will be contested by three players from the Championship; Blackpool’s Matt Phillips, Brighton & Hove Albion’s Lewis Dunk and Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Saha.

And finally Gus Poyet, Dougie Freedman and Lee Clark are the nominees for Outstanding Managerial Achievement.

Poyet is up for the award after guiding Brighton to the League One title last season, while Freedman was in charge of the Crystal Palace side that beat Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Carling Cup. Clark has been shortlisted after guiding Huddersfield Town on a league record-setting unbeaten run, but he was sensationally sacked by the Terriers last week.
