Nottingham Forest have sacked manager Steve Cotterill - just 24 hours after the club’s takeover by the wealthy Al-Hasawi family from Kuwait was completed.

And now Forest fans can expect a big name to be brought in, with Diego Maradona and Harry Redknapp already having been linked with the City Ground role.

Cotterill took the Forest job last October after replacing Steve McClaren and guided the club to Championship survival.

A club statement issued on Thursday morning read: “Nottingham Forest can confirm that manager Steve Cotterill has departed the club with immediate effect.

“Mr Cotterill met with the club's new owners, the Al-Hasawi family, yesterday and after long deliberations they have decided to make a new appointment in a bid to deliver their long-term vision.

“The club would like to acknowledge their gratitude to Mr Cotterill for guiding it through an extremely difficult and traumatic period and for retaining the side's Championship status last season.

“The club will be making no further comment at this time.”

Cotterill’s departure has come as no surprise for other managers were being linked with the job even before the takeover was completed.

The likes of Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson and Leeds United manager Neil Warnock – formerly in charge of city rivals Notts County – had also been mentioned as possible replacements for Cotterill.

However, the latest buzz is that the new owners will go for a high-profile world name to try to restore Forest to the Premier League, with speculation suggesting Argentina legend Diego Maradona could be in the frame.

Forest have been well backed to win the Championship title since their takeover and while they are now as short as 8/1 with some bookmakers, 14/1 is still available with Blue Square.
